President Mohamed Muizzu today distanced himself from a controversial resort deal involving Hassaan Waheed, a relative and political appointee of the current administration, stating that the transaction "is not my concern."
Responding to a journalist's inquiry during a press conference at the President's Office, Muizzu claimed he first learned of the matter through news reports. He maintained that he had no prior knowledge of the transaction before it was publicized.
The President stated that upon learning of the allegations, he contacted Hassaan to seek clarification. During this conversation, Hassaan reportedly confirmed his shareholding in the resort project.
Adhadhu previously reported that Hassaan leveraged his family ties to the President and his position as Deputy Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates to secure shares in the resort. Muizzu’s remarks today appeared to confirm several key aspects of these reports.
Questions raised after Muizzu's family member becomes resort shareholder
Hassaan Waheed, a diplomat and relative of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, has sparked controversy after becoming a shareholder in a luxury resort despite having no business background. Allegations suggest he used his political influence and family ties to secure the shares, raising serious concerns about government corruption.
Muizzu further announced that he has dismissed Hassaan from his post, asserting that such conduct by a government official is unacceptable under his principles.
"Once I became aware of it—it is not a principle I subscribe to. I do not believe someone in a government position, appointed by me, should be involved in such matters. Therefore, he was dismissed from his post as soon as I found out," the President said.
The company in which Hassaan holds shares is a joint venture with India’s Ayatana Hospitality. The firm has acquired the islands of Thaa Fushi, Vanbandhi, and Kani for resort development. The Indian partner in this venture is Aratt Developers, a real estate firm.
The issue was brought to light by Adhadhu after questions were raised regarding why a financially and technically capable Indian firm would partner with Hassaan—who has no prior business background—to develop the resorts.
