An American national has been arrested and remanded in custody for 10 days after a magazine loaded with live ammunition was discovered in his luggage upon arrival in the Maldives.
According to police, the suspect has been identified as 36-year-old American citizen Cobol Britain Tyler. He arrived in the Maldives by air yesterday.
The magazine was found during a routine luggage screening. Authorities have not yet disclosed his point of origin or the flight he used to travel to the Maldives.
The suspect was apprehended under a court order. When presented before the court today for a remand hearing, he was ordered to be detained for 10 days.
The importation of any type of weaponry or ammunition into the Maldives is a criminal offence. While firearm ownership is a legal right for private citizens in the United States, it remains strictly prohibited under Maldivian law.
