Former President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has pledged to establish a just Maldives that ensures equality for all citizens and prosperity for businesses if he wins the upcoming presidential election.

Speaking after announcing his bid for the MDP presidential primary, Shahid said that the Maldives is currently at a critical and dangerous crossroads. He noted that development projects across the country have come to a standstill and the national economy has completely plummeted. He emphasized that only those with proven experience can rectify these issues.

"I will establish a government that is inclusive and transparent, where every single citizen is equal; a government that provides solace to the people through policies that transform their lives," Shahid said.

Shahid further stated that his administration would foster a compassionate society rooted in the noble principles of Islam. He also vowed to strengthen the Maldives' international relations and usher in a prosperous era for local businesses.

"I will prevent the crumbling Maldivian economy from further decline and revitalize it. I will create a favorable environment for businesses, particularly private enterprises, by working closely with international financial institutions, foreign investors, neighboring countries, and the hundreds of nations with whom we share friendly ties," Shahid promised.

Following the announcement of his candidacy for the MDP primary, Shahid resigned from his position as the party's President last night. In his resignation, Shahid explained that he does not believe it is appropriate to contest competitive internal elections or endorse candidates while holding a top leadership post within the party.

In addition to Shahid, former Vice President Faisal Naseem, former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih have also announced their intentions to contest the MDP primary.

Shahid assured that no MDP member would be sidelined under his leadership.

"By the will and grace of Allah, this country will once again be adorned and illuminated by the golden-yellow rays [of the MDP]. The Maldives will be returned to its people, and the nation will be painted in golden-yellow once more," Shahid declared.

Last night’s gathering was attended by MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil, Maradhoo MP Ahmed Didi, Addu City Women’s Development Committee President Fathimath Hijra, former MDP Chairperson Moosa Manik (Reeko), and several former members of Parliament.
