The People's Majlis has informed lawmakers of the decision to cancel today's scheduled sitting.
In a message sent to lawmakers at 1:30 am last night, the Majlis Secretariat stated that a sitting would be held sometime today. The message noted that the time and agenda for the session would be shared later.
However, in a message sent to MPs this morning, the Majlis Secretariat announced that the planned sitting would no longer take place.
"Please be informed that there will be no sitting of the People's Majlis today. Members will be notified of the date for the next sitting at a later time," the Secretariat's message read.
The call for a sitting followed yesterday’s parliamentary decision to extend the second session of the Majlis until August 20. This extension was granted to facilitate the passage of an amendment to the Decentralization Act, which would allow the government to reclaim lands currently under the jurisdiction of local councils.
According to the Standing Orders of the Majlis, the legislative year is divided into three sessions. The first session runs from February 1 to May 15, the second from June 1 to August 15, and the third from October 1 to the end of November.
Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated yesterday that the decision to extend the current session was made to complete several high-priority legislative matters.
