Home Minister Ali Ihusaan announced today that the investigation into the fire that broke out on December 12, 2024, at two buildings housing three government ministries has been concluded and the facts behind the incident have been uncovered.
Responding to a query in Parliament, Ihusaan said that "the incident has been investigated and the probe is now complete." He noted that the fire began within the air conditioning units.
"During the initial stage when police attended the scene, body camera footage confirms that the fire first ignited within the wiring of the air conditioning units located inside the ceiling," Ihusaan said.
The minister’s confirmation of the investigation's completion comes nearly two years after the government had been reluctant to disclose details regarding the case. The minister added today that a press conference would be held later to provide further information on the matter.
The fire at the two buildings has been the subject of several serious allegations against the government. Former President Abdulla Yameen alleged that the government intentionally set fire to the buildings.
"By the time Muizzu leaves office, no evidence will remain. Wasn't the Green Building burned down to destroy that evidence? He was the Mayor at the time, and the Ministry of Construction's documents were also housed there. It was a place burned down by people, you know? Someone set it on fire and destroyed all the evidence," Yameen claimed.
