Six weeks have passed since President Mohamed Muizzu last held a press conference, failing to uphold his promise to meet with the media every Monday.
Muizzu’s last press briefing took place on June 29. In the six weeks since, five Mondays were regular working days and did not fall on public holidays.
When Adhadhu inquired yesterday regarding the President’s absence from the media briefing, Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) declined to comment.
However, last week, the spokesperson said that the President was unable to meet the press due to a busy meeting schedule, adding that he would hold briefings whenever time permits.
Muizzu promised to hold weekly press conferences starting from March this year during his Presidential Address delivered on February 5.
Despite this commitment, he has recently avoided media briefings even while in Male'. His most recent appearance before the press also followed a three-week hiatus.
In the 25 weeks since the weekly briefings were scheduled to begin on March 2, Muizzu has only met with the press on eight occasions.
Before the commencement of the weekly briefing series in March, Muizzu held a press conference on May 3, 2024. That was only the second press conference of his administration; the first was held shortly after he took office on December 5, 2023.
