President Mohamed Muizzu returned to the Maldives today following an official visit to Qatar to pay his respects to the Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the Royal Family, following the passing of the former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
During the visit, Muizzu met with the Emir of Qatar to offer his condolences. The leaders also discussed the bilateral relations between the two nations, reaffirming their shared commitment to further strengthening the long-standing ties of friendship and cooperation.
The former Emir was a significant benefactor to the Maldives, overseeing several landmark initiatives. These include the commencement of Qatar Airways operations to the country, the establishment of the Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani School in Laamu Atoll, and the construction of Masjid al-Sheikh Qassim bin Al Thani in Hulhumale'.
During his reign as the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani conducted an official visit to the Maldives in 2005.
Sheikh Hamad passed away on Sunday at the age of 74. His funeral was held the same day, and he was laid to rest at the Lusail Cemetery in Doha.
In honour of the late former Emir, the Maldivian national flag was flown at half-mast from 12:00 pm yesterday until 12:00 pm today.
Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, is widely regarded as the principal architect of modern Qatar, transforming it into a wealthy and sovereign nation.
Under his leadership, Qatar underwent a period of unprecedented economic, social, and cultural development, significantly elevating the nation's prestige and influence on the international stage.
Sheikh Hamad’s tenure also saw significant political reforms, including the ratification of Qatar’s first permanent constitution in 2004 and the introduction of municipal elections. These elections marked a historic milestone as women were granted the right to vote and stand as candidates for the first time.
