Prison Shop

Maldives Correctional Service has refused to disclose details regarding the items available for purchase by inmates at the Maafushi Prison shop.

In response to a Right to Information (RTI) request filed by Adhadhu, Corrections stated that such information is classified and must remain confidential.

The RTI request sought a comprehensive list of items available for purchase at Maafushi Prison along with their prices. Additionally, it requested details on items that were out of stock as of June 1, 2026, and the number of days those items had remained unavailable.

Adhadhu understands that many items on the approved list for inmates have been unavailable for an extended period. Families of inmates have previously taken to social media to express their concerns over these shortages.

Information indicates that the out-of-stock items include various cosmetics, toiletries, and certain food products.

The responsibility for supplying goods to the Maafushi Prison shop is held by the Prison Cooperative Society (PRISCO). It is understood that PRISCO subcontracts the supply of these goods to another private company.

PRISCO entered into a 10-year agreement to provide retail services to inmates on February 1, 2018. The contract is set to expire on February 28, 2028.
