The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed has said there is no evidence against eight individuals facing trial over a major protest held in Male' on the night of October 3, 2025.

Speaking outside the Criminal Court, Nasheed said that the charges filed against the MDP members failed to meet the necessary standards required within the criminal justice system.

"The Prosecutor General has raised these charges without obtaining the required or sufficient evidence. In reality, there is no evidence at all; when evidence is lacking, it can only be fabricated," Nasheed said.

Nasheed remarked that such charges are reminiscent of those frequently seen in the Maldives prior to the ratification of the "Green Constitution." He further characterized the prosecutions as being politically motivated.

"We must take these cases to international courts. It is our responsibility, and we will do so," Nasheed declared.

"There is no doubt that these are politically motivated charges."

The charges of intentionally obstructing a law enforcement officer were filed against Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, North Hulhumale' Councillor Fathimath Zahiyya, Abdul Salam, Mohamed Hamaid Abdul Ghanee, Ali Nauful, Aishath Najudha Ali, Ali Muavvazu, and Hussain Rasheed.

The trials for some of the accused commenced today.
