The final results of the election to appoint a Chairperson for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) were officially announced today.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed secured a landslide victory in the election. His closest contender was Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, while Ibrahim Mohamed finished in third place.
The results of the election are as follows:
- Mohamed Nasheed: 21,063 votes (69.16%)
- Meekail Ahmed Naseem: 9,263 votes (30.42%)
- Ibrahim Mohamed: 132 votes (0.43%)
Out of the 50,176 members eligible to vote in this election, 30,695 individuals cast their ballots.
A total of 241 polling stations were established across the Maldives and abroad for the election. Sri Lanka was the only overseas location where a ballot box was placed.
Following his victory, Nasheed met with the MDP leadership and his rival candidate, Meekail, yesterday. Additionally, Nasheed held an informal meeting with the MDP National Council last night.
According to the MDP constitution, the Chairperson is the highest authority responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the party's internal affairs. The Chairperson serves a five-year term. The outgoing Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail, served in the position for three years and six months.
The Chairperson’s responsibilities include representing the party in communications with the government and other political entities, organizing internal elections, presiding over the Congress, National Council, and National Executive Committee, and overseeing the party's administrative functions.
