Voting is underway to elect the President of the Dhaalu Meedhoo Island Council.
The candidates are Mohamed Shahid, representing the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and Suha Ibrahim, the candidate for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
A fresh round of voting was mandated for the council presidency after the previous election resulted in a tie. Both Suha and Shahid secured exactly 392 votes each in the initial poll.
A total of 1,049 eligible voters are registered for today’s election. Two polling stations have been established: one located on Meedhoo and another in the capital, Male'.
In the local council elections held in April, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) emerged victorious, securing 238 seats. The ruling PNC followed with 216 seats.
The MDP also secured majorities in all five of the cities, with their candidates winning the mayoral seats in those urban centers.
