Former President Mohamed Nasheed has secured a landslide victory in the election held today to appoint a Chairperson for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Nasheed contested the election against the Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem. Based on the results of the ballot boxes counted so far, Nasheed maintains a significant lead.
With results from 130 boxes currently in, Nasheed has secured 8,661 votes, while Mickail has received 4,158 votes. Nasheed currently leads by a margin of 4,503 votes. A total of 241 ballot boxes were stationed for this election.
Following the preliminary results, Meelail has conceded defeat and contacted Nasheed to offer his congratulations. Nasheed stated that everyone would work together collectively moving forward.
A total of 50,176 individuals were eligible to vote in today's election. However, the exact voter turnout has not yet been confirmed.
The MDP is the largest political party in the country after the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). This marks the sixth election held to elect a Chairperson for the party.
Previous holders of the Chairperson position include Nasheed, Mariya Ahmed Didi, Reeko Moosa Manik, Ali Waheed, and Hassan Latheef. Nasheed served as the party's inaugural Chairperson.
