Former President Mohamed Nasheed is likely to secure a landslide victory in the election held today to appoint the Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Nasheed contested the election against Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem. Based on the results of the ballot boxes counted so far, Nasheed maintains a significant lead.
A total of 241 ballot boxes were stationed for the polls. Results from 95 boxes show Nasheed leading with 2872 votes.
A total of 50,176 individuals were eligible to vote in today’s election. However, the exact voter turnout has not yet been confirmed.
The position of MDP Chairperson is considered the most influential post within the party. Nasheed has previously served in this capacity.
For today’s election, 241 polling stations were established across the Maldives and abroad. Sri Lanka was the only international location where a ballot box was placed.
The MDP remains the largest political party in the country, second only to the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). This marks the sixth election held to elect an MDP Chairperson.
Previous holders of the Chairperson post include Nasheed, Mariya Ahmed Didi, Reeko Moosa Manik, Ali Waheed, and Hassan Latheef. Nasheed served as the party’s inaugural Chairperson.
