Former President Mohamed Nasheed has vowed to challenge the dismissal and suspension of employees who participated in welcoming ceremonies during his ongoing nationwide campaign for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairmanship.
During Nasheed’s campaign visit to Huvadhu Atoll, several state-owned enterprise employees faced disciplinary action for greeting the former president or taking photographs with him. These measures include dismissals, suspensions, and forced transfers to other islands.
In a press statement, Nasheed’s campaign office characterized these actions as a direct attempt by the government to interfere in the MDP’s internal elections. The statement further condemned the measures as a campaign of intimidation and a violation of fundamental rights.
"We assure you that Nasheed will lead the efforts to challenge these actions, including seeking legal redress. Furthermore, this campaign will closely monitor the situation of those victimized by these unjust measures and provide them with necessary assistance," the statement read.
The number of individuals dismissed or suspended due to political reasons has risen to over 11 within the past week alone.
