An unusual fever outbreak has been reported in Noonu Landhoo.
An official from the island’s health centre told Adhadhu that the fever began spreading during the recent Eid holidays. Since then, more than 40 people have been seeking medical consultation daily, the official said.
"Around 45 people are consulting the doctor every day. Today alone, 19 children between the ages of one and 17 have been brought in," the official stated.
Despite the rapid spread of the fever and its high prevalence among children on the island, which has a population of only about 600, the official noted that the island’s school has not yet been closed.
"The school has not been closed yet as we have not received permission from the Ministry of Education. The illness involves fever, vomiting, and cold-like symptoms. Some children are also experiencing diarrhea," the official added.
While the fever continues to spread and affect scores of residents, the official noted that the Ministry of Health has yet to issue instructions on how to proceed.
The official further revealed that the island’s medicine supply was initially exhausted following the onset of the outbreak. However, a new shipment of medical supplies has since been received.
