Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has officially endorsed Galolhu South MP Meekail Naseem for the position of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson.
Meekail is contesting the seat against former President Mohamed Nasheed. With both candidates currently engaged in campaigning, Solih confirmed his support for Meekail in response to a question during a joint press conference held by three former presidents tonight.
"President Nasheed entered the race a bit later. Meekail launched his bid three months ago, and I expressed my support for him the moment he came forward. That remains the case."
"My support stands exactly as it did then," Solih stated.
Meekail is one of only four MDP members to be re-elected in the 2024 Parliamentary Elections. He successfully defended his Galolhu South constituency in the polls to serve a second consecutive term.
Meekail joined the MDP in 2012 following the downfall of the first MDP administration led by Mohamed Nasheed. He previously served as the President of the party’s youth wing and currently sits on the party’s National Council.
According to the MDP charter, the Chairperson is the most senior official responsible for organizing and managing the party's internal affairs. The position carries a five-year term.
