The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially opened applications today for the position of Chairperson, the party’s highest administrative office.
In a statement released by the MDP, the party announced that individuals interested in contesting the chairperson election may submit their names starting today until 2:00 pm on May 2.
Candidates vying for the position must be registered members of the MDP and meet the eligibility criteria stipulated in Article 73 of the Constitution and Article 8 of the Parliamentary Elections Act. These requirements align with the fundamental qualifications mandated by law for candidates contesting for the People’s Majlis.
The party has arranged for applications to be submitted via a designated Google Form. Required documentation includes a criminal and debt record clearance from the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), as well as a criminal record clearance from the Maldives Correctional Service.
The MDP stated that the election to select the new Chairperson is scheduled to take place on June 12, with voting conducted between 2:30 pm and 8:00 pm.
Those who have expressed interest in the post so far include MP for Galolhu South constituency Meekail Naseem, former President Mohamed Nasheed, and former MP Alhan Fahmy.
