MFDA is now taking legal action to remove these illegal medications from the market.

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued a warning regarding the unauthorized import and sale of supplements and medications marketed for weight loss, muscle building, skincare, and sexual enhancement.

The authority cautioned that these products are of unverified quality and pose severe health risks, including cardiac arrest and sudden death.

In a public announcement, the MFDA noted an increase in various products being imported under different brand names for purposes such as weight reduction, bodybuilding, aesthetic enhancement, and sexual performance.

The authority highlighted that such products are being advertised and sold through retail outlets and online platforms without the necessary regulatory approvals.

"It has been observed that members of the public are purchasing and using these products without medical consultation. The safety and quality of medications sold without the required permits have not been verified by this authority. Consequently, the use of such products can lead to significant public health risks," the statement read.

The MFDA further emphasized that using these products without professional medical advice increases the risk of tragic health complications, including heart failure, strokes, and sudden death.

The authority reminded licensed pharmacies that authorized establishments must also obtain specific permits before selling such products. The MFDA further confirmed that it has launched an operation to remove unauthorized and illegally advertised products from the market.

The MFDA warned that legal action will be taken against those importing and selling unauthorized medications under the "Medicines Regulation" and the "Healthcare Services Act."
