The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidates have secured presidential seats in the Women's Development Committee (WDC) of all five cities.
MDP secured WDC President and mayoral seats in Male', Addu, Kulhudhuffushi, Fuvahmulah and Thinadhoo.
MDP candidate Aishath Reesha defeated the ruling People's National Congress (PNC)'s Ashiyath Alaika with 52 percent of the votes in Male'.
In Kulhudhuffushi, Aminath Ibrahim from the MDP won with 63 percent of the votes. MDP's Mariyam Sharuna Adil won with 49 percent of the votes in Thinadhoo.
Mariam Shiuna was elected as the President of the WDC in Fuvahumula with 56 percent of the vote. In Addu, Fathimath Hijra was elected with 76 percent of the vote.
Provisional results show that most of the council President seats were won by MDP and independent candidates. The government has also lost the referendum to merge the presidential and parliamentary elections.
