The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party has secured a major victory over the government in the elections held today, former President Mohamed Nasheed declared.
The MDP is leading in the local council elections and Women's Development Committee (WDC) seats. The party is also heading to win mayoral and council seats in major cities.
"[We have won] All the cities, most island, and said 'no' to the government in the referendum. Congratulations to all the candidates and voters," Nasheed said in a post on X.
According to the ballots counted so far, 73 percent are against the government's constitutional amendment to merge the presidential and parliamentary elections.
