The Elections Commission (EC) has closed queues for the local council elections, Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections and the referendum to merge the presidential and parliamentary election. 

Voting began at 8:00 am today and was scheduled to end at 4:00 pm. But an extension was given until 5:00 pm due to the warm weather and long queues. 

A total of 1,592 candidates are contesting the local council and WDC elections. Most of them are candidates of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC). 

A total of 294,937 people are eligible to vote in the two elections and the referendum. They are 150,410 men and 144,527 women.
