President Mohamed Muizzu has been invited to the inauguration ceremony of Bangladesh's Prime Minister-in-waiting Tarique Rahman.
The Bangladesh government has invited top officials from 13 countries, including the Maldives, to attend the ceremony. The Maldives government has not yet announced whether Muizzu accepted the invitation.
Tarique is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who died last year. His party is the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The party won a large majority in the legislature in the general election.
Tarique Rahman, who returned home after 17 years in exile in the UK, won his own constituency, Bogura-6, by a huge margin.
The BNP and its coalition won 211 of the 299 seats in the legislature. This is a two-thirds majority in the House. The BNP's main rival, the Jamaat-e-Islami Alliance, won 70 seats. The remaining seats were won by independent candidates and other smaller parties.
