Only three cases were filed with the Office for Civil Rights last year, the Attorney General's (AG) Office said.
The Civil Rights Office, which is under the AG Office, was created in November 2023 and accepts complaints related to civil and political rights.
In 2023 and 2024, 28 cases were submitted to the office. But the number of cases decreased significantly in 2025.
According to the AG Office annual report, only three cases were reported last year. It did not mention the type of complaints.
The report says that the office responded to only 13 of the 28 cases filed in 2024, while six cases were attended to in 2025.
After the establishment of the Civil Rights Office, the government assigned four main mandates to the office. It is:
- Assess the government policy on protecting and ensuring the enjoyment of civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution and laws
- Establish a formal system for submitting complaints about discrimination in civil rights
- Ensure that institutions are protecting and ensuring civil rights in the provision of services
- Review the efforts of government agencies to protect civil rights and provide relevant consultation and recommendations
In an interview with Adhadhu, Attorney General Ahmed Usham said that the office would not investigate any cases, but would send a reply to each complaint.
“The office does not have investigative powers and will not investigate [anything],” Usham said.
