Bangkok, Thailand: Maldives National Women’s Futsal Team suffered a 5–0 defeat to Nepal in their second match of the SAFF Futsal Championship, as they continue their historic first appearance at international level.
Making their international debut at the championship and entering the tournament without any prior friendly matches, Maldives had endured a heavy 11–1 loss in their opening game.
However, their second outing showed clear signs of improvement, with a disciplined performance that belied the final scoreline.
Despite creating several scoring opportunities, Maldives were unable to capitalize, while Nepal, who had drawn 2–2 with Sri Lanka in their opening match, made their chances count. The match was played at the Hua Mak Indoor Stadium, after the first three games of the tournament were held at the Nonthaburi Stadium.
Maldives began the match with a solid defensive approach, but Nepal opened the scoring through Jennifer Rana. Bimala Chaudhary doubled the lead in the 11th minute, before Rana struck again just a minute later. Nepal extended their advantage before the break when Manisha Thapa Magar converted from the penalty spot.
Despite trailing at halftime, Maldives showed confidence and intent. Team captain Fathimath Saliya (Shaa) came close to scoring with an effort from the edge of the area, while the second half saw Maldives hit the post twice. One of those efforts came from Mariyam Noora, whose low drive struck the upright, and Raniya Ibrahim also went close but was denied by Nepal goalkeeper Sabitri Kishan.
Nepal’s fifth goal came via an own goal by Maldivian substitute Fathimath Saina, who inadvertently deflected the ball into her own net while attempting to halt a Nepalese attack.
Maldives will continue their SAFF Futsal Championship campaign with their third match against Pakistan on Saturday. This will be followed by a three-day break before they face Bhutan on January 21, Sri Lanka on January 23, and Bangladesh on January 25.
Despite the results, the Maldives Women’s National Futsal Team continues to gain valuable experience as they build toward long-term development on the international stage.
