Former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed have decided to meet this week.
The meeting is expected to take place before Solih departs for Sri Lanka for a family visit. Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, the former MP for the Alifushi constituency, confirmed that the discussion has been officially scheduled for sometime this week.
This high-level meeting comes after a period of significant political division. Previously, internal disagreements led to a split within the MDP, resulting in the formation of a new party called The Democrats. However, Nasheed and several of his close associates have recently rejoined the MDP.
While the MDP officially welcomed these returning members last June, new tensions have emerged within the party. These recent disagreements are centered around the competition for the upcoming Local Council Election primaries.
In addition to the planned meeting with Solih, Nasheed met with the President of the MDP, Abdulla Shahid, last night. The specific details of that discussion have not yet been released to the public.
Solih and Nasheed have been close friends since childhood and long-time political allies. Their relationship became strained during the 2023 Presidential Election, leading to a public rift that they are now seeking to resolve for the benefit of the party.
