A man arrested for assault with a sharp weapon has been remanded in custody for five days under the Gang Act.
The Criminal Court ordered the remand of Sameeh Mohamed, who has a previous record of arrest in connection with multiple cases.
The arrest warrant states that Sameeh was actively involved in the alleged crime and had been on the run. Police had sought seven arrest warrants for him in the past.
According to the warrant, police told the court that the assault was carried out using a sharp weapon and the victim had sustained serious injuries.
Meanwhile, President Mohamed Muizzu declared on November 17 that no gangs were now active in the country.
Speaking at a rally at the Social Centre to mark the second anniversary of his administration, Muizzu said gang members were now doing business.
“I asked the Home Minister the other day how many gangs have been identified. The Home Minister was very happy and said there are no gangs," he said.
"Now, those who used to be in gangs have stopped it, they've stopped committing gang crimes and now they have gone back to normal life to do business and live a decent life... [He said] we can't find any gangs now."
Just two days after his claims, police arrested two people on charges of gang assault.
