Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) has proposed to include vandalising mosques as an act of terrorism.
In a post on social media X, Ibrahim said vandalising mosques has become common and that is why he proposed the bill.
"Although it doesn't make headlines every time, vandalising mosques is common. This should be stopped immediately," he said.
A mosque in Addu city and a mosque in Male' city were vandalised recently.
The man who damaged the Thoiba mosque in Male' was undergoing treatment for mental illness.
Meanwhile, a man was arrested last year for causing damage to Furqan Mosque in Male'.
A mosque in Vaavu Keyodhoo was also vandalised. The suspect was apprehended after islanders began a campaign to find the vandal.
