Malé, Maldives: Philippines strengthened their bid for a place at the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 with a composed 2–0 victory over the Maldives in their Group A qualifier on Tuesday at the Maldives National Football Stadium.
The result lifts the Philippines to 13 points, level with group leaders Tajikistan. The two sides will now meet on March 31 in a decisive clash that will determine the group winners and the sole direct qualifier for the Asian Cup.
The match began with early promise for the hosts, as Maldivian forward Ibrahim Mahudhee Hussain (Feydhoo Ibbe) delivered a dangerous cross just 14 seconds into the game, though no teammate was able to convert.
The Philippines responded strongly, with Randy Schneider forcing goalkeeper Mohamed Faisal into a sharp save in the 11th minute after cutting inside and unleashing a powerful curling effort from the edge of the box.
Maldives, still recovering from a heavy 4–1 loss in the reverse fixture, held firm until the 24th minute. Defensive lapses allowed Jefferson Tabinas to slip unmarked to the far post, where he headed home to give the visitors the lead.
Faisal was called into action again around the half-hour mark, reacting quickly to keep out Andre Leipold’s low header from close range. But the respite was brief. In the 37th minute, the Philippines doubled their advantage through Sandro Reyes, who controlled a pass from Javier Gayoso, spun past Maldives captain Samooh Ali, and calmly placed the ball into the far corner.
The second half saw the Philippines ease off, giving Maldives a rare opening in the 51st minute. Naiz Hassan attempted a delicate lob from distance, but goalkeeper Kevin Mendoza rushed out to block and preserve his side's clean sheet.
The Philippines nearly added a third late on when Jens Rasmussen sliced through the Maldivian defence but fired over the bar in the 83rd minute. Despite the missed chance, the visitors comfortably secured all three points.
The victory marks the Philippines’ fifth win in seven meetings against the Maldives, who have defeated them only once, back in 2009 at Galolhu Dhandu during the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers.
The Maldives remain without a point in the current qualification campaign, having lost all five matches. Their final opportunity to register a result comes on March 31, when they host Timor-Leste in Malé.
