President Mohamed Muizzu has said that the most corrupt are the lower and middle class employees amid increasing allegations of corruption against the senior officials of his administration.
Speaking at the Republic Day ceremony at the Youth Centre on Tuesday, Muizzu said corruption is mostly committed by employees from the lowest to the middle classes who have the opportunity to participate in it.
"Often, acts of corruption are carried out by those who have the opportunity to participate in them. Mostly from the lowest level to the middle-class employees," he alleged.
But he acknowledged that the top-level employees were also involved in corruption.
Muizzu's claims come amid increasing allegations of corruption against the senior officials in his administration. Several complaints have been lodged at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), including multiple allegations against the President.
More than 20 cases have been filed with the ACC linking Muizzu with corruption when he was the Housing Minister and Mayor of Male'. The anti-corruption watchdog earlier confirmed that it was investigating these complaints.
