Fuvahmulah city council has said water supply in the southern city can resume in about two days.
The water supply to the entire city with a population of about 10,000 was suspended due to contamination on November 10. This was done after laboratory tests showed the water was contaminated to an unsafe level.
“The council is receiving many complaints from the people about the water supply interruption in the city. Based on the information shared by Fenaka Corporation early tonight, it is expected to take at least two days to restore the water service,” the council said in a statement.
It added that the matter had been brought to the attention of all government institutions. The council requested an immediate solution at a meeting with President Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Fuvahmulah on November 4.
Adhadhu understands that the water in Fuvahmulah was tested by the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) on November 4.
Fenaka said the contamination was caused by a leak in a main pipe. The corporation said in a statement that chlorine was being added to clean the water network.
Bottled drinking water has also run out in the city due to the water crisis. An operation is underway to transport more bottled water from Addu and Male'.
Those who need water in an emergency can go to the MNDF building with their ID cards and each household will get a case of water.
