The Finance Ministry has forecast that the economy will grow by more than five percent this year and next year.
This was included in the proposed state budget for 2026. It forecasts real GDP growth at 5.4 percent next year.
However, the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), and foreign agencies forecast GDP growth of 4.5 percent for next year.
This is below the past average of five percent.
The tourism industry makes the biggest contribution to the economy. The activity and growth of other industries are related to tourism.
The tourism industry has seen positive growth this year, with high tourist arrivals in all the months compared to the previous year.
More than 1.8 million tourists visited the country as of October 17, according to the latest figures from the Tourism Ministry. This is about 9.9 percent more than the previous year.
But the number of bed nights has not seen a significant increase compared to last year. Figures show just a 2 percent increase from last year.
