Voters in Feydhoo island have decided to remain part of the Addu city council.
According to the results of the five ballot boxes in Feydhoo, 1,131 people voted to remain part of the city council, while 447 voted to establish a separate council.
The results of the ballot boxes in Male' also indicate that the majority of voters were in favour of remaining part of the city council.
Feydhoo has a high population with over 5,800 people registered to the island. The Elections Commission (EC) said 4,368 people were eligible to vote.
Voting was held from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the referendum to divide the southern city's council.
The government claimed it did not have a stand on the matter, but Home Minister Ali Ihusaan and Feydhoo MPs Ibrahim Didi and Ismail Nizar campaigned for a separate island council.
A referendum was held in Addu on October 9, 2010, to see whether the atoll should be declared a city.
Feydhoo voted against becoming a city, with 494 voting against and 397 voting in favour of a city council.
