Criminal Court Judge Hussain Faiz Rashad was suspended yesterday over a case being investigated by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
It is unclear which case was connected to Faiz. The JSC has not yet commented on the matter.
However, Faiz recently issued an order to release suspected drug lord, 41-year-old Ali Anwar Mohamed, from police custody.
Anwar tried to flee to Sri Lanka upon release from police custody. But he was denied entry into the neighboring country.
Police re-arrested him with a court warrant when he returned to the Maldives.
Faiz is also presiding over the trial of former nurse Haleemath Lamha accused of killing her Filipino co-worker Mary Grace.
He was previously suspended by the JSC in November 2021 after a leaked audio of him saying that former President Abdulla Yameen was convicted by "kidnapping" the judges.
He was a member of the three-judge bench in Yameen's trial. He was suspended for 60 days, but the JSC lifted the suspension a month later.
