MPs to pay for damaging microphone in parliament committee room

The parliament Committee on Members' Privileges and Ethics has decided to charge MPs for damaging a microphone during a heated meeting on the Media Control Bill.

The microphone was damaged during a committee meeting on September 15 when MPs Hussain Imran Latheef, Mauroof Zakir and Hussain Sameer grabbed it.

Ruling party MP Imran tried to prevent opposition MPs Mauroof and Sameer from using the microphone to protest against the controversial bill.

Adhadhu journalists who were present during the meeting saw Imran forcibly pulling the microphone from the table.

But in a message to a WhatsApp group of his constituents, Imran said he was not the only person responsible for damaging the microphone.

He added that the cost of damage to the microphone has been arranged.

During today's meeting of the Members' Privileges and Ethics committee, MP Mohamed Shameez proposed to recover the money for the damage.

MP Ali Ashraq supported the proposal. The audio for the live meeting was not available after that, but Adhadhu understands the committee approved to charge all three MPs for the damage.
