United World College Maldives (UWC) has offered three Maldivian students the opportunity to study abroad.
This year's UWC scholarships went to Izyan Binthi Ali Shameem from Noonu Kudafari School, Yazan Abdulla Yazan Saaid of Brightway International School and Hawwa Ishha from Thaajudheen School.
They were awarded scholarships from Mahindra United World College in India, Li Po Chun United World College in Hong Kong and Pearson United World College in Canada.
The scholarship students will complete an International Baccalaureate Diploma. It is a two-year course at the same level as A-Level. It is recognised by major universities around the world and the Qualification Authority of the Maldives.
“This year’s UWC scholarship recipients are all getting an opportunity that will change their entire lives, allowing all three selected to excel academically and represent the Maldives at these colleges,” said Zaheena Rasheed, Chair of the UWC Maldives Executive Committee.
UWC said students were selected for the scholarships through an open application process, a two-day selection camp and interviews to assess their performance.
Three other Maldivian students are currently studying abroad under an opportunity provided by the association.
"UWC aims to inspire hope and enthusiasm for positive change among the youth. We hope that these students will return to serve the country after completing their education," Zaheena said.
United World Colleges were formed for upper secondary-aged youth in 1963 to promote world peace and coexistence. Today, there are United World Colleges in 18 countries.
UWC Maldives is a civil society organisation registered in 2001. Sixty-seven students have completed scholarships with the free assistance of Alifulhu Thuhthu Foundation.
