Kulhudhuffushi City, Maldives: Commonwealth Beach Handball Championship 2025 came to a thrilling close, with Pakistan lifting the title and the Maldives securing a historic bronze medal, marking one of the nation’s proudest achievements on the international stage.
Originally planned with eight teams, the tournament featured six nations, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, and South Africa, who showcased their speed, skill, and the high-octane drama that makes beach handball one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide.

Maldives Make History with Bronze
For the Maldives, the championship was a story of resilience and progress. Competing in their first major international beach handball event, the team impressed with three wins from five league matches, advancing to the semifinals where they were narrowly defeated by eventual champions Pakistan.
In the third-place playoff, the Maldives faced Bangladesh, a side that had beaten them earlier in the group stage. This time, however, the Maldivian players showed grit and determination, producing a spirited performance to overturn that result and clinch the bronze medal.
This podium finish represents a landmark moment for Maldivian handball, underscoring the nation’s rapid rise in the sport. The team’s discipline, tactical growth, and unshakable fighting spirit drew praise from fans and opponents alike.
Remarkably, the Maldives only began structured beach handball training 10 months ago in Kulhudhuffushi City, under the guidance of Pakistani coach Asim Rasheed. To win their first international medal on the same sand where the journey began is a powerful testament to the vision and planning of Handball Maldives.
Pakistan’s Road to Glory
Pakistan entered the tournament as favorites and fully justified that status. With tactical precision, swift transitions, and clinical finishing, they stormed through the competition undefeated.
In the final, Pakistan faced Sri Lanka in a hard-fought battle, where their superior organization and physical presence made the difference. The victory sealed Pakistan’s first Commonwealth Beach Handball Championship title, a triumph that reinforced their dominance in the region.
