Journalists in neighbouring Sri Lanka have decided to stage a protest in front of the Maldives High Commission in Colombo to oppose the media control bill and to show solidarity for journalists in the Maldives.
Sri Lankan journalists said in a social media post that the protest will take place at 3:00 pm. Sri Lankan nations that support press freedom have also been invited to join the demonstration.
According to social media posts, some Maldivians who reside in Sri Lanka are also expected to join the protest.
On Tuesday, the government exploited its super majority in the parliament to push through a draconian legislation aimed at restricting freedom of expression and speech in the Maldives.
The People's Majlis, which acts as a rubber stamp for Muizzu's government, approved the bill despite concerns by the local journalist community and international organisations.
