Veteran journalist Ahmed Zahir (Hiriga) has resigned as the president of the Maldives Editors Guild.
In a post on X, Hiriga wrote that the Maldives Editors Guild is paralysed because many of its executive committee members hold senior government positions.
"It is my concern that the association remains silent when Maldivian journalists and the entire media as a whole continue to face multiple challenges," he stated.
Hiriga started his career in journalism with Haveeru and served as its Managing Editor. He is currently the Managing Editor of Dhauru.
He led the efforts to form the Maldives Journalist Association in 2006. He served as its president and also served as a member of the Maldives Media Council (MMC).
Hiriga won the National Award for Journalism and was also accorded the Alimas Galan by the MMC for his contribution to promoting the media industry.
