Mahchangolhi North MP Ibrahim Mohamed (Janab) has expressed support towards extending the presidential term for more than five years.
The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) lawmaker appeared on Mendhuru TV and said there is nothing wrong with maintaining the presidential term to ensure the initiatives started by President Mohamed Muizzu continue until they are fully implemented.
"In my opinion, extending the presidential term is not a bad thing for the greater good, for the collective benefit. That's something that can be discussed. I think it's a good thing," said the Muizzu's brother-in-law MP.
When questioned whether the government was considering extending the presidential term and whether he intended to start the work, Janab did not give a direct response.
"The people's opinion and consultation will be needed. Expert opinion will be needed, the consultation of the cabinet will be needed and the consultation of the parliament will be needed," he said.
His comments come as the government-controlled parliament deliberates a bill to allow public referendums on matters such as extending the presidential term. The bill was proposed by the government.
