Feydhoo MP Ismail Nizar from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has expressed frustration over the power outage issue in Addu city.
In a post on Facebook, Nizar said Fenaka officials had promised to resolve the issue for multiple deadlines, but failed to take any action.
“It is unacceptable that the people of Addu are in darkness without electricity. I call on [authorities] to take immediate action and resolve this issue," he said.
Fenaka recently bought generators for the power house in Addu and electricity was supplied uninterrupted for several weeks.
However, Addu mayor Ali Nizar told Adhadhu that a power cut lasted for about one hour early on Saturday.
Fenaka has not disclosed a reason for the sudden power cut.
"The power went out for about one hour at around 2:00 am while we were asleep," the mayor of the southern city said.
The city had been experiencing frequent power cuts since last year, with most of the fasting month of Ramadan in March spent without electricity.
The government said they were working to resolve the issue, but no progress has been made so far. Fenaka refuses to disclose the reason for the frequent power cuts.
An investigation by Adhadhu found that old generators were bought to resolve electricity issues in islands across the country, including Addu.
But Fenaka has not revealed whether any action was taken in connection with the purchase of worn-out generators.
