The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Falah has warned that the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s President Abdulla Shahid will soon face investigations.
He made the announcement on social media X in response to a post by Abdulla Shahid. The MDP President posted about the opposition party's decision to protest in Male' on October 3.
"Look at what they are talking about after clearing out the entire country. Now you are trying to create chaos in the country because your corruption is going to be investigated soon," Falah wrote.
But he did not say why the alleged cases against Shahid were not investigated in the past.
There have been speculations about investigations against Shahid and other MDP leaders, but authorities have not confirmed this.
In addition to investigating opposition figures, the government is also trying to push a legislation to silence the media. MDP accused the government of trying to silence the media to cover up corruption among government officials.
