The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the arrest of journalists protesting against the bill to dismantle the free press.
In a statement, the main opposition party condemned the unlawful arrest of peacefully protesting journalists.
"The MDP urges all members of parliament, civil society, and the free press to stand against the autocratic actions of President Muizzu's adiministration," it stated.
Police arrested several journalists near the President's Office today. They include Moosa Rasheed of Citizen, Ahmed Aaidh of Adhadhu and Lamya from MV Plus.
They were forced into a police vehicle, warned against protesting and released with the condition that they do not stay near the President's Office.
Journalists are continuing with their protest, sitting outside the President's official residence Muleeaage.
