The Greater Male' Region has been experiencing power cuts for the past three weeks.

Power outages were reported in Male' and Hulhumale' on August 14 and August 9, while a planned power cut was executed this morning.

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) announced the planned power cut last night to do some work on a 50 megawatt engine in Hulhumale'.

Male', Hulhumale' and Hulhule' also experienced a six-hour power outage on June 1.

Data from STELCO shows frequent power cuts in the region in the days following the June 1 outage.

STELCO claims these power outages are due to technical issues. But the company has refused to provide details.

But sources have blamed irregular fueling of tanks at the power house for the frequent power cuts.

STELCO is forced to refuel its tanks daily due to insufficient fuel. State Trading Organization (STO) supplies fuel in limited quantities because of unpaid bills.

STELCO cannot pay the bills because the government does not pay subsidies and government agencies do not pay electricity bills.
