The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has postponed its congress to mid-2026.
The party's national council earlier set the congress to be held before August 15. But the date was postponed at a national council meeting on Wednesday night.
Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said the party leadership will propose to merge the posts of president and chairperson to strengthen the party's running.
The party leadership will also propose to amend the constitution so that the leader will not be able to contest the next presidential election during his term.
Fayyaz said the party leader will not be allowed to hold any government position, membership of parliament or job in an independent institution under an MDP government.
He said the purpose of the change is to allow the party to run freely from political factions within the party.
The last MDP congress was held in 2022 in Male'.
