Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla during his two-day state visit to the Maldives.
The meeting took place at Kurumba Maldives resort. Modi arrived in the country on Friday morning at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu.
"Talked about the deep-rooted India-Maldives friendship, including the close relationship between our respective Parliaments," Modi said in a post on X.
He described the formation of the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group in the 20th People's Majlis as "a welcome step for bilateral ties."
Abdul Raheem was a leader in the India Out movement while the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) was in the opposition.
The PNC was very critical of India when in opposition. After assuming office in late 2023, Muizzu continued to indirectly launch verbal attacks on India.
But on Friday, he heaped praises on India and Modi while a welcome song also described as a "generous and loyal" friend.
