Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa has criticised the Managing Director of the Bank of Maldives (BML), who was previously dismissed for being negligent in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
During a committee debate on the situation of the MMPRC and Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC), Ghafoor stated the current administration would not look into the corruption.
"In the MMPRC scandal, MVR 1.2 billion was deposited through BML. The person responsible for it was sacked, and today he is appointed as the bank manager," he said.
BML Managing Director Mohamed Shareef was accused of corruption during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen. Ghafoor said he was on the parliamentary committee that looked into the matter.
The parliament also referred the matter to the police because they believed Shareef had given false information to the committee. But the bank denied it.
Ghafoor said the corruption was directly caused by the negligence of the national bank and expressed concern, as some people linked to the scandal were now parliamentarians.
"This government is facilitating corruption. This government's promise is to investigate the MMPRC case. If you have the courage, investigate it. And then bring those responsible to justice," he added.
