Hulhumale' South MP Ahmed Shamheed has suggested setting up a separate committee to look into the ethical issues of judges and a special court for the dismissal of certain ranks of judges.

Shamheed expressed concern during the debate on the amendment bill to the Judges Act in parliament on Monday.

He noted the importance of changing the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to ensure justice. The commission could be made up of only legal and professional people, he said.

"A separate disciplinary committee should be formed after separating disciplinary matters from appointment matters. A special court could be set up for the dismissal of certain ranks of judges," Shamheed stated.

He further said existing law allows a person with a diploma to become a judge and proposed to change the requirement to a degree. He also suggested that a separate course be designed to train judges in the courts.

"Every case should have a deadline in advance. Otherwise, the cases will last for a lifetime. It is better to make such changes," Shamheed said.

He said corruption and illegal profiteering in the Maldives are not due to a lack of laws but due to disobedience to laws.
