The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers Margaret Satterthwaite has met with the Maldives Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr. Salma Rasheed.
Satterthwaite visited the Maldives UN office in Geneva on Friday after expressing concern over the unlawful dismissal of two Supreme Court justices.
On May 14, Justices Mahaz Ali Zahir and Azmiralda Zahir were dismissed after conducting an unlawful investigation and without giving them an opportunity to respond. Justice Husnu Suood had earlier resigned in protest against intimidation.
In a post on X, Satterthwaite said she held discussions with the Maldivian Permanent Representative. The Maldives UN office in Geneva said it was ready to work with the Office of the Representative on Judicial Independence.
Satterthwaite expressed concern when the investigation was launched against the justices and issued a statement of concern regarding the government's attempts to influence the judges and the judiciary.
