The Thimaaveshi (Environment) boat which was brought to the country two years ago for environmental monitoring purposes is in need of repairs again.
The boat, built by an Indian company, was purchased with the help of the World Bank. It was brought to the Maldives and put to use in May 2023.
Since then, the boat has undergone repairs twice. Last week, the Environment Ministry announced for repairs for a third time.
The repairs are expected to cost millions. In addition to the repairs, new systems will be installed on the boat.
Repairs for Thimaaveshi boat
- Installation of windlass (winch) and anchoring system on both hulls
- Remove the existing crane and install a hydraulic crane system
- Installation of storm protection device
- Install and wire the panel board
- Repair or replace steering wheel
- Ventilation of engine and generator room

The boat was found to have serious issues when it first arrived in the Maldives and had to be left inactive for many days.
Adhadhu understands that the police marine department previously conducted an evaluation which revealed that some of the systems installed on the boat were worn out. But the systems were installed as new items.
The boat was brought to the Maldives after a team from the Transport Ministry went to India and inspected it. They include the project consultant Ibrahim Yasir.
The boat was to be handed over to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). However, the EPA has not yet taken over due to the recurring issues with it.
Thimaaveshi boat was built by Vijai Marine Shipyard in Goa. The company had earlier said it was the first catamaran-style vessel built in India.
