The Maldives government has voted to adopt a draft resolution on Cooperation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe to promote freedom of religion.
The vote was taken on Wednesday. The resolution is named "Cooperation Between the United Nations and the Council of Europe."
On Wednesday, member countries voted to submit the draft resolution to the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations.
The resolution calls for cooperation between the United Nations and the European Council to protect and promote "all human rights." These include freedom of religion and freedom of expression.
The resolution also calls to work together to fight terrorism and to grant "the rights of all" in a society without discrimination.
It was passed with 105 votes in favour. Nine countries, including the United States and Russia, voted against. A total of 33 countries abstained. These include Saudi Arabia, India, Sri Lanka, China, Oman, Pakistan, Kuwait, Yemen and Egypt.
Some countries did not vote for the resolution because it condemned Russia for the war with Ukraine.
